Whether you are a guitarist wanting to learn prog rock (e.g. Rush), prog metal (e.g. Dream Theater), or both, this book provides a complete guide to the styles and techniques of progressive music. The book takes one of the most challenging styles of music and actually makes it quite easy to learn.

This book (with CD) teaches you everything you need to know to become a competent progressive guitarist: odd time signatures, metric and harmonic modulations, prog rock chords and progressions, exotic lead guitar scales, and advanced soloing concepts (octave displacement, creative phrasing, and playing "outside").

The book systematically works through the following topics:

Chapter 1: Prog Chords
Chapter 2: 4/4 Rhythms
Chapter 3: Odd Time Signatures
Chapter 4: Metric Modulation (Mixing Odd Time Signatures)
Chapter 5: Chord Progressions
Chapter 6: Exploring Scales
Chapter 7: Prog Rock Soloing
Chapter 8: Monster Etude
Final Thoughts/Suggested Listening

Each chapter is divided into subtopics. Each subtopic has easily applicable examples that the guitarist can immediately begin integrating into his/her playing. After a few subtopics are covered, the guitarist learns a song or solo, which integrates all of the concepts previously taught.****The book does not progress too quickly nor too slowly. Each example and culminating solo is challenging but not beyond grasp.*****

I would recommend this book to anybody interested in learning how to play progressive rock or prog metal. Also, this will not only teach you to play in the style of your favorite prog guitarist (e.g. John Petrucci (Dream Theater), Michael Romeo (Symphony X), Alex Lifesone (Rush), etc.), this book will help you cultivate your own progressive guitar voice.

****CAUTION: This method does assume that you have a solid knowledge of music notation and/or tablature, major and minor pentatonic scales, modes of the major scale, basic theory such as diatonic harmony and chord construction, and basic lead guitar techniques.****Glenn Riley, a graduate of Guitar Institute of Technology and an annual instructor of the acclaimed National Guitar Workshop, wrote the method.
